Queerikone Greta Garbo als König*in Christina von Schweden, lesbar als trans*, nicht-binär, lesbisch oder bi. Das Drehbuch stammt von Salka Viertel, damals Greta Garbos Geliebte, die in den 1950er-Jahren während der Kommunistenjagd in Hollywood auf die schwarze Liste gesetzt wurde. Trotz der Hollywood-Konventionen avancierte der Film zu einem Klassiker des queeren Kinos. Die berühmte Kussszene zwischen Christina und ihrer Hofdame Ebba wäre nur ein Jahr später der Filmzensur zum Opfer gefallen. Legendär sind Garbos Worte als Christina: „I shall not die an old maid! I shall die a bachelor“ (Ich sterbe nicht als alte Jungfer – ich sterbe als Junggeselle!).

Queer icon Greta Garbo as the queer icon Queen Christina of Sweden, who could be interpreted as trans*, non-binary, lesbian or bisexual. The film is based on a screenplay by Salka Viertel, Greta Garbo’s lover at the time, who was blacklisted in Hollywood during the McCarthy political witch-hunts of the 1950s. Despite Hollywood conventions, the film went on to become a classic of queer cinema. The famous kissing scene between Christina and her lady-in-waiting Ebba would have fallen victim to film censorship just one year later. Garbo’s words as Christina are legendary: “I shall not die an old maid! I shall die a bachelor”.
